OT:Ruth 1:16-17

Reading:
And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:   Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.

Commentary:
Naomi was a Judean, a believing child of God.  Ruth (before she knew Naomi) was a Moabite, an unbeliever.  It is likely Ruth became a believer, by the Word of God spoken through Naomi.  The new faith of Ruth then, the Holy Spirit working within, caused her to utter such devout and fervent words of love.  In the Christian Church, where Christ has revealed His undying love for us, through His own life, death and resurrection, we too love our fellow believers fervently, though they are not our own family.  The fruit of Christ's Spirit is love, unselfish sacrificial love.  "See that ye love one another fervently", the Bible says.  While we often have family members who depart from Christ, we hold our Christian brothers and sisters more dear.  When Mary and the brothers of Jesus once came to see Him (expecting Him to stop teaching for their sake), Jesus "looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!  For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother."
