Reading:
The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
Commentary:
In this world, what is it that we focus upon with
our eyes? Are our eyes filled with
light, namely that Christ is the Light of our Life, or are our eyes constantly
filled with darkness and evil? Our
Savior thus teaches us here that our eyes are to be guarded, namely since they
will rest upon whatever the focus of our heart, we must by faith keep them from
evil. The dark things of this world, the
visual images of all things evil, our eyes must turn away from lest they overthrow
our faith. Many lives are consumed and
destroyed (many souls are damned), because the person never restrained his eyes
from the evil, and they forever turned away from Christ the only good. "If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is
that darkness!" Before our eyes we
must keep Christ, our Light and Life, whose life was given in exchange for our
own on the cross. His eyes, His focus
was never on evil. He kept His eyes free
of sin, and His greatest joy was the salvation of our soul. Even now in heaven His eyes rest upon us with
grace and favor. Seeing our garment of
faith, His righteousness which covers our sins, we are pleasing in His sight.
