EPISTLE: I John 1:8-10

Reading:
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.   If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.   If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Commentary:
According to God's Word here written, believers both know and confess we are full of sin.  Even after conversion there is no lack of sin within us (or without), for the Bible says of believers, "we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away."   Knowing however that Christ Jesus has made our sins His own, even paying our full price with His own blood, we now confess our sin and also our Savior from all sin.  For "if any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous."  Since Christ the Word lives within us, such causes our confession, and we know He will be with us alway, even unto the end of the world.  By His grace, by His Spirit working through the Word, we "were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God."
