EPISTLE: Hebrews 13:8

Reading:
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Commentary:
"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever."  Here is the timeless and eternal Jesus Christ, the object of our faith, the source of our justification, and the object of all believers through all time.  Jesus Christ is eternal, namely from everlasting to everlasting, the Alpha and Omega of Scripture.  He is the sole source of any man's salvation, and His grace for all who believe cannot fail us.  "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever."  On this verse Luther writes, "Yesterday is the time before His incarnation, today is the time of His revelation in the flesh.  Thus it is now and in eternity the same Christ, through whom, and through whom alone, all believers in the past, in the present, and in the future time are delivered from the Law, justified, and saved."
