And
in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though thou wast angry
with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me. Behold, God is my salvation; I will
trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my
song; he also is become my salvation.
Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of
salvation. And in that day shall ye
say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people,
make mention that his name is exalted.
Sing unto the LORD; for he hath done excellent things: this is
known in all the earth. Cry out and
shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in
the midst of thee.
Commentary
This
chapter in Isaiah is a prophecy concerning Christ and the reconciliation He
achieved between God and man, via the cross.
"Though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and
thou comfortedst me." Because of
man's sin, God's anger was justly kindled against all mankind. Without the God-man Christ, God's wrath would
still be upon us for our sin. Christ
Jesus however, took God's wrath upon Himself on the cross, and suffered for all
our sins. This willing sacrifice turned
and literally moved the heart of God, so there was peace. God really turned His own anger away from us,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. He is
worthy of all our praise, as this chapter reveals. "Behold, God is my salvation; I
will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my
song; he also is become my salvation."
Note also the last verse, "great is the Holy One of Israel
in the midst of thee." Psalm 45
says similar, "God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved:
God shall help her, and that right early." God lives in the midst of His Church (Zion),
through the Means of Grace. His Spirit
through the Word brings and comforts our hearts with the forgiveness of all
sin.
