EPISTLE: I John 4:12-16

Reading:
No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.   Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.   And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.   Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.   And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

Commentary:
Note here the twofold proof that believers know they are believers.  "We love one another" because God dwells in us and it is His Holy Spirit Himself who causes us to see and "testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world."  Only believers know the Father sent Jesus to be this world's Savior.  Such knowledge proves His Spirit within us and "Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God."  Living in us, the Holy Spirit then constantly helps us to do holy works, and so we by God's grace even live in God, namely Christ has made us a part of His own body, and "ye are not your own".  "God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him."  May our fellowship with Him and His fellowship with us, encourage us and strength us to do His will for "Thy will be done."
