Ye
are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith
shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and
to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are
the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it
under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in
the house. Let your light so shine
before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is
in heaven.
Commentary
If we are not willing, and do not rebuke the evil of
this world (unbelievers living wickedly), this "salt" has lost its
flavor, and is henceforth good for nothing, to be trodden under foot of
men. Such Christians are not true Christians.
True Christians however are the light of this world. We confess and repent of our sins, putting
our faith in Jesus Christ our Light.
Since He has saved us by the reconciliation of the cross, we love Him
and praise His name. With His help we
also bring forth good fruit, the fruits of faith. Hence we live according to God's
commandments, a very different life in contrast to the world. But more importantly, we bear witness to this
world, by word and deed, that Christ is not only our Savior, but the
world's. We too want all men to be
saved, and to come to the knowledge of truth.
