Reading:
Let
us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is
faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to
provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of
ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one
another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Commentary:
With faith, the believer co-operates with the Holy
Ghost. While the Spirit is always the
One who moves us and it is always the Vine who sustains the branches, by faith
we no longer resist the Spirit but work with Him. The old man within us however, "wavers"
and "doubts". Hence God's Word
here teaches us in Hebrews 10 to hold fast to our profession (that Christ has
redeemed us from sin and justified us by His blood), namely we must continue to
strive against our old man, knowing and rejoicing "He is faithful". God never wavers. Christ is our continual Mediator in heaven,
who by His blood pleads our innocence (and this too will not waver). We then, or faith, our faith, clings to God's
promises in the midst of our wavering.
Likewise we are to exhort one another, provoking one another to good
works. When we see a brother straying,
we beseech, pray for, warn, and encourage such to hear and heed God's
Word. Thus let us not despise church
attendance or let the world and her cares come first before Jesus
