Luthers Words: Christian Liberty Applies to the New Man Only
The righteousness of grace or the liberty of conscience does not apply to the flesh at all; for the flesh should not be free but should stay in the grave, in the prison, on the deathbed; it should be subject to the law and should be worked hard by the Egyptians. However, the Christian conscience should be dead to the Law, that is, free from the Law, and should have nothing whatever to do with it. It is useful to know this well, for it helps to console troubled consciences.
(WLS #2417)
Spiritual Liberty Grants No Moral License If people want to enjoy my teaching and be free from the law of the pope, they must do so without harming and endangering others, or they must stay under the pope; for my Gospel allows no one the sort of freedom from pope and from devil that threatens to be harmful and dangerous to another. People should certainly be free, but not contrary to the laws of God and the rights of love.
