GOSPEL: Luke 12:54-57

Reading:

And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is.   And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass.   Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?   Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?

Commentary:

Christ here warns all men to recognize the signs of the times, and be forewarned.  Judgment Day could be today.  While most men can recognize a storm coming by certain patterns and behaviors in nature, so many miss God's window of grace, wherein His saving Word comes to man that he might repent and be saved in Christ.  Though Christ fulfilled all signs in His day, so all should recognize and see Him as the Messiah, "He came unto His own, and His own received Him not."  Our lesson here is to not let God's salvation pass us by, "Knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed."  Wherever His Gospel Word is preached today, Jesus still comes with grace and mercy for those who want to be forgiven.  In the Means of Grace He still comes to us bringing gifts.  "Baptism doth also now save us".  "Given and shed for you for the remission of sins."  "Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God."  "The Words that I speak unto you, they are Spirit and they are life."  "He that believeth on Me hath everlasting life."
