EPISTLE: I Thessalonians 4:11-12

Reading:

And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;   That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.

Commentary:

When the Lord says we are to "study to be quiet, and to do your own business", this means we are not to be busybodies, meddling in the lives of others.  Rather we are to work hard at being quiet, minding our own affairs.  We are also to be busy working rather than idle.  Idle hands lead to poverty and want.  Though all we do should be done to the glory of God, we sometimes waste countless hours playing games or surfing the net with no real purpose.  Life spent in a virtual world, is life squandered in this real world.  Yet our dear Lord Jesus was never idle or wasteful with His time, rather He spent His whole life fulfilling the law for us, and in the end suffering our curse.  He gave his life to deliver us from death and give us everlasting life in exchange.  A thousand lifetimes is not enough to glorify Him who died for all.  Therefore "Let us walk honestly toward them that are without" working with our hands the thing which is good, that we may have to give to him that needeth.
