OT: II Samuel 18:31-33

Reading:
And, behold, Cushi came; and Cushi said, Tidings, my lord the king: for the LORD hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.   And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.   And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!

Commentary:
Just like the prodigal son, Absalom had rebelled against his own father, King David, and had fallen from grace.  While God had granted Absalom a certain time of repentance, we have no knowledge that Absalom repented at the time of his death.  Hanging from a tree by his hair for his own crimes, three darts were thrust through him.  We too by our sins against father and mother deserve such a death.  Yet there was ONE Son who did not hang from a tree for his own crimes, but it was for our sins He hung.  Jesus too was thrust through, by the nails which pierced His hands and feet, yet this was the merciful way we would be cleansed from our sins against father or mother.  "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree."  Since Jesus took God's curse away from us, we need only believe in Him to be saved.  Let us therefore pray for all fallen Christians who have strayed, that God may grant them repentance unto life.  "God would have all men to be saved."
