Reading:
Know
ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are
to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto
righteousness? But God be thanked, that
ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of
doctrine which was delivered you. Being
then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
Commentary:
Speaking to His dear children of faith, the Lord
here first warns us not to again become servants to sin. If we yield and give ourselves over to our
sins continually without repentance, we will be servants of such unto
death. To live in unbelief without
Christ, is to return to the devil's kingdom of darkness. How wonderful then it is to be delivered from
such slavery, by the very Son of God who did not yield in any way to sin, but
willingly was obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Jesus was our Substitute. In this way, God reconciled Himself in His
own heart, with all sinners so that "the blood of Jesus Christ His Son
cleanses us from all sin." Through
Christ then we are set free from sin, loosed from the power of the devil, and
being free, we now serve the Lord out of gratitude, "faith worketh by
love." To "obey…that form of
doctrine" is nothing more than to believe the Gospel, that Christ Jesus
has saved us from sin, death, and the power of the devil. "Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness."
