EPISTLE: I Peter 3:15-16

Reading:
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:  Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

Commentary:
To sanctify is to "make holy".  We sanctify the Lord God in our hearts, when we by faith direct sinners to the Holy God above, who sent His Holy Son to save us from our unholy sins, through the cross.  When the world in an outward manner sees the way and manner we live, namely we keep God's commandments, love and help our neighbor, go to church on Sunday, speak good words,….the world desires this spiritual peace and happiness we have.  They may as you, "Why do you live in hope and trust in this Jesus?"  If the Lord grants us such an opportunity to speak of Christ, let us give a good answer with "meekness and fear".  The meek believing soul trusts in God in bad times.  We fear God, namely stand in awe of Him and hold His Word as a matter of life and death.  If the world then nevertheless speaks evil of us and persecutes, our good behavior will smite their conscience.  Let our conversation then be good and not evil, and may our words lead the lost to Jesus.
