EPISTLE: Colossians 1:19-21

Reading:

For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled.

Commentary:

Christ had all the fullness of God, bodily. All of God then is in that One person of Christ, including ALL the Father and ALL the Spirit, yet God cannot ALL be contained in One body, for the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him. Such then is a mystery for us, yet our salvation is no mystery. God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself. Our reading says the same, for Jesus "made peace through the blood of His cross, by Him to reconcile all things unto Himself." By our sins we could not make peace with God, nor buy one day in heaven. Rather it pleased the Father not only to send the Son, giving Him all fullness, but it also pleased the Father to bruise Him, our sins being there. Hence Christ removed and took away from us all God's wrath against our sin. In His heart there is now only peace, love, and mercy toward His believing children, though His wrath is upon those in unbelief. Since God has justified the whole world through Christ, by faith alone we are justified.
