OT: Psalm 118:14-24

Reading: The LORD is my strength and song, and is become my salvation.   The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly.   The right hand of the LORD is exalted: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly.   I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.   The LORD hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death.   Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the LORD:   This gate of the LORD, into which the righteous shall enter.   I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation.   The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.   This is the LORD'S doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.   This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Commentary: This Psalm written by David was for festival services.  It was often chanted at the time when Temple offerings were brought forth, and it was used during the Passover.  In this psalm we see David's joy in knowing the Lord is his strength.  In His name believers overcome every trial and temptation, knowing Christ is their salvation.  Christ also is the "right hand of the Lord", namely that Arm with all strength and power, for by His right hand He gains the victory.  Who does the Lord gain victory over?....sin, death, and the power of the devil.  Faith knows, "I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD."  Notice also the Lord "hath not given me over unto death.   Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the LORD."  While we must pass through the first death before reaching heaven, the second death, namely hell, has no power over us.  Sinners who believe in the justification of Christ need not fear sins which are forgiven.  Sin therefore has no power over us, for Christ conquered all sin's power by the cross.  Nor can the devil accuse the guilty declared innocent by the Judge.  "Whosoever believe on Him (Jesus) is not condemned."
