OT: Amos 8:11-12

Reading:

Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.

Commentary:

The worst punishment God can inflict upon a nation, is a famine of the Word. In the days of Amos the prophet (700-800 B.C.), such was God's judgment upon the nation of Israel. They had given themselves over to idolatry (which at this time was the worship of the two golden calves, set up by Jeroboam…I Kings 12:32), and they had become absolutely cruel in all their dealings with their neighbors. Verse four of the same chapter God says, "Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail…" God threatens to punish them so severely for their evil works, He says in verse 10, "I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day." There is little difference between our nation today which gives its blessing to all things evil and likewise condemns all that is good (Christianity). It is for the sake of God's children, the believers, He keeps His word among us. Let us cherish it, use it, and search the Scriptures daily, lest He take the Word away.
