GOSPEL: Matthew 11:16-19

Reading:

But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,  And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.  For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.  The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

Commentary:

The generation or people in Christ's time failed on two accounts.  They didn't rejoice when they heard the Gospel, neither were they contrite (sad in heart) concerning their sins.  John the Baptist's preaching of repentance should have worked sorrow of heart regarding sin, and Christ's preaching of the Gospel should have caused men to rejoice and eat and sing and laugh with joy in the knowledge of forgiveness!  Regarding the children who sat as unmoved stones in the marketplace, while others "piped" or "mourned" before them, such were the Pharisees.  Like spoilsports, their hearts were untouched by God's Word…..not mourning their sins nor rejoicing in their salvation.  "Wisdom is justified of her children."  God's children mourn their sins yet rejoice in their salvation, while unbelievers harden their heart against the Word, refusing to be moved.
